Porsche 914, 914/6 & 916 VIN & Engine Numbers
Did It Come Like That?
The table below provides an overview of VIN, engine
number and engine size per model and model year. This data is useful in
validating whether a Porsche 914 or 914/6 retains its original
engine as well as validating engine size and expected performance
characteristics. Data provided is based on original
Porsche factory publications. Nominal Porsche 916 information is also
included. Our apologies for the remaining gaps in information, but the
factory
literature currently at our disposal is not comprehensive. We'll fill
things in
appropriately as our library expands.
KEY:

indicates engines designed for worldwide (not region or country specific)
distribution.
SM indicates vehicles equipped with the "Sportomatic"
transmission.
(USA) denotes cars
manufactured to meet United States federal emissions standards.
(USA-Cal) denotes cars
manufactured to meet both United States federal and California state
emissions standards (note that all vehicles destined for the U.S.
after 1974 met California emissions standards and suffered the expected
drop in PERFORMANCE).
