There is a lot of
debate and confusion regarding the exact script type found on authentic
open-end wrenches delivered in Porsche 914/6
tool kits from the factory. The "DROP FORGED STEEL GERMANY"
(DFS) wrenches were used in multiple Porsche models from 1964 into 1974 as
follows:
1964-1965
356C
1965-1967.5
912 (I believe that "SELECTED-STEEL GERMANY" (SS)
wrenches were used
in 912 tool kits in late 1968 and 1969 models.)
1965-1973.5
911 (Late 1973 and early 1974 911 tool kits often had a mix of
DFS and "SELECTED-SPECIAL-STEEL WEST GERMANY" (SSS) wrenches, likely a
result of exhausting the DFS inventory as they moved to the SSS
wrenches. They apparently ran out of the 17-19mm DFS wrench first.)
914/6
(All model years.)
Additionally,
there were subtle variations in the script on some
of the DFS wrenches used in
various Porsche models and model years, perhaps most notably on the
10-11mm wrench (variations pictured at right with the known correct 914/6 wrench
at top). Additionally, DFS wrenches were (and perhaps still are) produced
with slightly more rounded lettering (example 12-13mm & 14-15mm
wrenches pictured at right). Whether there were actually specific script
styles associated with specific Porsche models/years is (thankfully)
beyond the scope of this site, as it deals only with Porsche 914 &
914/6 models. The 914/6 wrench set pictured is an authentic factory tool
kit set. I cannot say whether any of the DFS variations noted/pictured
appeared in factory Porsche 914/6 tool kits, but I have no personal
knowledge or other indication that they did.
