1970-1973
Porsche® 914 and all Porsche 914/6 tool kits were equipped
with spark plug wrenches as described below. This nicety fell prey to
cost-cutting efforts in 1974.

The
1970-1973
Porsche 914 model year vehicle tool kits came with a two-piece, long shank
spark plug wrench. The wrench is comprised of a 190mm long straight tommy
bar and a 21mm socket that is 210mm long. Both pieces have a black oxide
finish. The socket has a rubber insert
to secure and protect the spark plug. The socket has four holes through
which the tommy bar can be placed to allow for different reach
requirements. This specific tool was included in some VW® tool kits of the
era (I think the single and double cab pickups), but most VW® kits with a
similar type spark plug wrench used a shorter version with fewer tommy bar
holes.
The 1974-1976
Porsche 914 tool kit contained no spark plug wrench.
All
Porsche 914/6 tool kits came with a two-part,
21mm spark plug wrench made by Klein. The socket has a satin-chrome
finish, is 140mm long, and has a rubber insert to secure and protect the
spark plug. It is stamped "KLEIN 21" in two rows slightly more
than midway down the shaft. The socket is turned by a 10mm Allen wrench
Allen wrench
either with no markings or stamped "DIN 911 SW10 W. GERMANY KLEIN" that fits into the top as
shown. The solid spark plug sockets that came
in the 914/6 (and 1970-1973 911) kits differ slightly from the wrenches
supplied in the mid-1973 through 1977 Porsche 911 tool kits in that the
upper grip ring is not smoothly "blended" into the shaft.
Additionally, the later '74-'77 plug sockets also had some subtle
variations among them. Examples of these later Porsche 911 tool kit Klein
spark plug sockets are shown in the third picture. The Klein spark plug
wrenches included in Porsche tool kits after 1977 are hinged,
spring-tensioned flex-sockets.
