Porsche 914 Factory Tool Kit Pliers
If They're Good Enough for a Volkswagen...
All 1970 and 1971 model year Porsche 914 vehicles arrived from the
factory with tool kits containing a set of 160 mm combination pliers.
The pliers used in the Porsche 914 tool kits are identical to those
supplied in Volkswagen models produced during the same years. These
tools came either painted black to the base of the cutting area or
unpainted except for the handles, As shown, the factory owners' manuals
for 1970 & 1971 Porsche 914 models display the "painted" format in
their tool kit illustrations. It is important to note that these early
1970s VW and Porsche 914 pliers differ from earlier Volkswagen tools in
that the bottom of the hinged section is a more rounded, octagonal
shape than the "V" shape found on more common pliers from earlier VW
kits. Pictures of the earlier Volkswagon tool kit pliers are
provided to better illustrate this characteristic.
According to the 1972 Porsche 914 owner's manual, inclusion of
pliers in the factory tool kit was
discontinued after the 1971 model year. Many 1972 Porsche 914 tool
kits did, however, come with pliers; whether this was merely
to use up excess inventory or due to error by Wolfsburg employees
accustomed to assembling kits
for Volkswagen models is open for discussion.
No Porsche 914 tool kits after 1972 contained pliers. The current
official parts catalog does not include pliers
in the list of tool kit components for any Porsche 914 model year.
