Porsche
914 and 914/6 Fog (Driving) Lights and Lenses
Porsche® offered Hella fog/driving lights as an option on the 914
series: round lights for the 1970-1974 model years and rectangular
thereafter. Furthermore, there were two styles of the earlier (round) style Porsche 914
US specification fog lights: those with Hella TN1-TN2 lenses and others
with Hella TN4 lenses.
All
factory Porsche 914 fog lights are mounted behind the front bumper and
shine through cutouts in it (1970-1974 models had chromed or painted
plastic fog light surround grilles that also served to mask the horns). The mounts
pivot to provide a degree of
adjustment. At right are comparison pictures of the two types of 1970-1974 Porsche 914
lights & components meant to highlight the differences. Each of the two
“round” styles is separately described in more detail below. Note that
the label comparison shows the TN1-TN2 lamp labels on top. The ring
comparison shows the offset ring stripped of its gloss black paint to
reveal the brass underneath.

914/6 fog/driving
lights (compare with items on this page to ensure
authenticity):
The Hella TN1-TN2 fog light was
available on the 1970-1972 Porsche 914 model years and the
Porsche
914/6 models. They are round Hella lamps comprised of a semi-gloss black
housing attached to the mount base with four unpainted brass rivets, a gloss-black painted brass trim ring, a
reflector dish, a light diffuser, a 35 or 45 watt Phillips bulb, a 110mm
Hella TN1-TN2 lens, a gasket,
four wire lens clips, a wire grommet and a ring retainer clip (with
screw). The lens has a horizontal offset about one-third the way up the
vertical fluting. The trim ring also has an offset between the
inner and outer circumferences so that the ring face is angled inward. The
light diffuser that shields the bulb in the TN1-TN2 lamps is chrome. The
Hella fog light switch in the 1970-1972 model year Porsche 914 and all 914/6
vehicles has a
green insert.
P914
currently has a 1970-1972 Porsche 914 Hella fog light switch available in
the SALES section.
The
more prevalent optional 1970-1974 Porsche 914 fog lights are also
round, 110 mm diameter Hella lamps with the same components as the TN1-TN2
models, but the lenses are the Hella TN4 units without the horizontal
offset. The painted brass trim rings on many of the TN4 lights do not have the offset between the
inner and outer circumferences, so the faces are flat. The light diffuser that shields the bulb in
the TN4 lamps is what appears to be tin and is not chromed. The Hella fog light
switch in the 1973-1974 model year Porsche 914 vehicles is identical to
the switch used in the 1970-1972 Porsche 914 and 914/6 models with the
exception of an amber insert with a slightly different graphic. Normal problems
associated with both styles of the round Porsche 914 and 914/6 driving lights are
lens wear & cracking from road debris, ring paint wear and chipping
from same, housing rust and reflector dish rust.
P914
is currently offering a set of nicely refurbished Hella TN4 fog
lights (with brass offset trim rings) for sale. Details are available in
the SALES section.
1975-1976 Porsche 914 models were optioned with
rectangular fog lights manufactured by Bosch.
