Porsche 914/6 and 1969 - 1977 Porsche 911
Factory Tool Kit Spark Plug Wrenches
The Other 914/6 Tool Kit Change
All Porsche 914/6 and 1969-1977 Porsche 911 tool kits came with a
two-part, 21 mm spark plug wrench made by Klein. The socket has a
satin-chrome finish and a rubber insert to secure and protect the spark
plug. It is stamped "KLEIN 21" in two rows slightly more than midway
down the shaft. The socket is turned by a 10 mm Allen wrench that fits
into the top. The Allen wrench is stamped
"DIN 911 SW10 W. GERMANY KLEIN" or merely "10 KLEIN" for later models.
Beginning in 1972 (not 1973 or 1974 as widely believed... and
therefore impacting both the Porsche 911 and 914/6 tool kits), the
spark plug sockets supplied by the factory changed slightly. This
change is barely discernible in the 1972 Porsche 911 factory owner's
manual tool kit picture (reproduced at right). The variations are
detailed below.

1969 - 1971 Porsche 911 and 1970 - 1971 914/6 Spark Plug Wrenches
The solid spark plug sockets that came in the 1969-1972 Porsche 911
and 1970-1971 Porsche 914/6 tool sets differ slightly from the wrenches
supplied in the 1972 914/6 kits and 1972-1977 Porsche 911 tool kits in
several ways. These earlier tools are slightly longer (146 mm vs. 140
mm or less), the upper grip ring is not smoothly "blended" into the
shaft, and the socket portion is not rounded on the outside.
1972 - 1977 Porsche 911 and 1972 914/6 Spark Plug Wrenches
The 1972-1977 factory-supplied spark plug sockets had some subtle
variations among them which have not yet been associated with specific
dates. A comparison
picture depicting the variants is provided. The Klein spark plug
wrenches included in Porsche tool kits after 1977 are hinged,
spring-tensioned flex-sockets.
